❊ Enabling PIV

To see if PIV is enabled on a Yubikey, download the Yubikey Manager software.

Once the software is installed, launch the application.

At the top of the menu, select Interfaces.

There are two categories in the above image: USB and NFC.

TypeDescription

USB

The modules checked will be enabled on your yubikey when you physically plug your yubikey into a USB port.

NFC

The modules checked on the right side will be enabled when you tab your yubikey against a NFC enabled cell phone or NFC device.

Ensure that the module PIV is indeed checked for the side you wish to utilize. You can enable both USB and NFC if you are unsure.

❊ PIV Interface

Once you have confirmed that your PIV module is enabled on your Yubikey, go back to the top of the menu, select Applications and then PIV.

You will be taken to the main PIV interface page which displays the following:

Pin Management

This is where you can set / modify the PINs associated to the PIV module. When performing actions such as signing a file / document, or logging into Bitlocker, you will be asked for a PIN. This is the PIN you must give. Click here to see the default PINs and what they do.

Certificates

This is where your PIV certificates will be stored.

Reset

This allows you to completely reset the PIV module. ALL certificates you have installed will be removed, and your PINs will be reset. It will be like you just purchased a yubikey for the first time.
